PTSD/Trauma

Healing from Within

Trauma and PTSD can be like shadows from the past affecting how we connect with ourselves and others.  These experiences can impact things like:

  • Do if I feel safe in the world?

  • Do I feel powerless, out of control, or helpless?

  • Do I feel alone?

  • Do I feel I am good enough or loveable?

  • Can I trust others and do I feel comfortable to be our truest self?

Posttraumatic stress disorder – also known as PTSD – is a mental health challenge that may occur in individuals who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic incident, suck as a serious accident, rape, or any other violent personal assault. People with PTSD often experience intense thoughts and feelings related to their traumatic experiences, even after the event is long over.  Clients with PTSD can relive the event through flashbacks and nightmares, as well as feel intense emotions such as fear, anger, sadness and a detachment from loved ones and an urge to isolate. They often avoid people and situations that remind them of the traumatic event.

How Can Treatment Help?

At Wise Mind Counselling Collective, we use an attachment informed approach to working with trauma.  We work together to learn trauma triggers, create new and heathier patterns of coping and foster a sense of safety, support and security.  Therapy becomes a secure base, helping build a foundation of trust and support.   We pull from several evidence based approaches, offering a integrated trauma treatment that allows for lasting healing and change.

  • EMDR – EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. This technique uses bilateral sensory input such as side-to-side eye movements to stimulate the brain to process difficult thoughts, memories and emotions.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) - therapy is another approach, recognizing the mind as a complex system with distinct parts that may carry different emotions and beliefs. Through IFS, individuals explore and integrate these internal parts, fostering self-compassion and reducing the impact of traumatic experiences.

  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) - Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to help individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It focuses on identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and beliefs that result from traumatic experiences. Through structured sessions, individuals learn to understand and modify these thoughts, fostering a healthier perspective on the traumatic event. CPT often involves writing about the traumatic experience, examining beliefs related to the trauma, and developing alternative, more adaptive ways of thinking. The goal is to reduce the emotional impact of the trauma and promote positive cognitive changes, contributing to overall recovery from PTSD.
